Overview:
3D solid computer models are required for the rapid production of quality die castings with low scrap rates. All rapid tooling methods achieve much of their speed by utilizing a 3D solid computer model. Simulation packages also rely on 3D solid models to accurately predict filling patterns and predict the location and size of defects. Unfortunately many older castings, some newer castings, and some casting designs do not have a 3D solid model associated with them. Reverse engineering technologies has been developed to quickly and accurately create solid models from physical parts or prototypes. Using this technology has the opportunity to reduce lead times as well as simplify the die casting of complex components.
