Machining versus Slides

amc.gif (6172 bytes)

The base of the elbow has two screw holes and a drill point which can be produced by two methods --  a fourth movable slide in the die or by a separate rough machining operation.

Note: With either method a separate finish machining step is required for the three features.

The choice of  fabrication method is primarily determined by a comparison of the costs of the two options: costs of a second set of machining steps with added handling and variability versus the cost of a more complex tool with slides.

Considering the high-volume production, choose the method
(Rough Machining, a 3-Feature Slide) which is best for controlling production costs and reducing scrap rates.
